Dental Hygiene

Looking for a hygienist in Wapping, East London?

Visit our experienced hygienists

Dental hygiene treatment is often delivered by a dentist or dental hygienist who will help to remove any plaque or ‘tartar’ from your teeth that may have built up in certain areas. Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes, this process is also referred to as scaling and polishing.

An important aspect of the hygiene visit is to show you how to look after your teeth so they remain free from plaque build up. You will be advised on the best brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.

Our dental hygienist at Hermitage Clinic is a registered healthcare professional who is trained in preventative oral care. They usually work under the supervision of one of our dentists and are responsible for cleaning, scaling and polishing teeth, whilst also providing information on oral hygiene techniques.

The BENEFITS of visiting a dental hygienist

The BENEFITS of visiting a dental hygienist

  • Maintaining good oral health: Regular professional dental hygienist cleanings can help remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing cannot achieve, and can help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
  • Education on oral hygiene: Dental hygienists provide education on proper oral hygiene techniques and can offer personalised advice on how to maintain good oral health.
  • Early detection of oral health issues: Dental hygienists are trained to detect early signs of oral health issues such as cavities and gum disease. They can then arrange an appointment with your dentist to have this followed up.
  • Cost-effective in the longer term: Visiting a dental hygienist will help to prevent more expensive dental treatments in the future caused by decay or poor oral hygiene maintenance.

Overall, dental hygienists play a vital role in maintaining good oral health by providing preventative care and education. At Hermitage Clinic, our Hygienist works closely with our dentists to ensure that patients receive the best possible care for their teeth and gums.

Bad Breath

We often get patients attending with concerns about bad breath. It is estimated that a high percentage of people suffer from chronic bad breath. It is an embarrassing problem that can affect your confidence and interactions with other people.

What causes bad breath?

  • Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases of the bacteria that coats your teeth and gums. Smoking, dehydration and certain strong foods such as garlic and onions can add to the problems.
  • Certain illnesses such as diabetes, liver or kidney problems, nasal or stomach conditions and “dry mouth” (xerostomia) that affects the flow of saliva can also be the cause of bad breath.
  • Dental problems account for the majority ofbad breath (halitosis) cases. These can range from broken, leaking fillings or obvious infections to impacted teeth and calculus buildup that can trap odour causing bacteria.

What is the treatment for bad breath?

Recommendations will be made by the dentist to correct and treat any dental disease that is directly related to the breath problem or gum disease. If an underlying medical condition is suspected, you may be referred to your GP for further investigation.
