Sinus Lift

A SINUS LIFT IS A SAFE AND CLINICALLY PROVEN PROCEDURE AND WHEN COMPLETED WITH EXPERTISE AND CARE

If you’ve been missing teeth in your upper jaw for an extended period, the bone may have receded, rendering it difficult to undergo dental implant treatment and giving your face a sunken appearance. A sinus lift makes use of the contours of your face to provide a second chance at the functionality and reliability of dental implants.

When is a sinus lift required for dental implants?

When is a sinus lift required for dental implants?

  • Your maxillary sinus is an air-filled space that is located towards the back of the upper jaw on each side.
  • When the upper jaw has had teeth missing for some time, the bone and surrounding tissues begin to disappear. If this occurs, there may not be sufficient levels of dense bone to place a dental implant.
  • Without enough bone, the implant will not be able to anchor securely and has a higher chance of failing.
  • Fortunately, science and implant dentistry techniques have advanced a great deal in this area and one solution is to perform a sinus lift.

Can a sinus lift and dental implants be done together?

  • This does depend on the individual case and at Hermitage Clinic we will carry out detailed planning from 3D scans of the jaw to help us advise you on the best option. In general, where a smaller lift is required, a crestal (or internal) sinus lift can be performed – this can often be carried out through the implant preparation site on the same day. The bone graft and the implant can then be placed at the same time.
  • In more extreme bone loss cases, before an implant can be placed, some patients will require surgical preparation in the upper jaw to ensure there is enough bone tissue into which the implant can be secured.
  • A lateral window (or external) sinus lift is an oral surgical procedure that extends into the sinus cavity above the jaw and packs bone graft material into this space. This graft material will usually be incorporated by the surrounding bone and form a solid structure very similar to bone. After a waiting period, the site will be checked and once an adequate bone density level is achieved your implant will be ready to be placed.
