Crowns & Inlays
PERFECTLY CRAFTED RESTORATIONS IN EAST LONDON
A crown is a type of dental restoration used to fix teeth that have been broken, weakened by decay or have a very large filling. The crown fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. It will also be tooth coloured, giving the restoration a more natural appearance so it fits in with the rest of your teeth.
Inlays and onlays are used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. They are recommended when your tooth needs more support than a regular filling. At Hermitage Clinic we have extensive experience in restoring teeth with the latest dental treatments.
Crowns
A crown could be a good solution for you if you have some discoloured fillings and would like to improve their appearance. Crowns can be used to replace these to give you a more aesthetic smile. Also, if you have had root canal treatment you will need a crown to protect or ‘cap’ the restored tooth, allowing you to eat and bite down on it as if it was a real tooth.
Dental crowns are a proven restoration method for teeth that have suffered severe damage extending to the gum line. Serving as a protective cap that encases the affected tooth, a dental crown offers a reliable long-term solution for reinstating your teeth’s functionality.
Crowns can restore:
- Teeth that are chipped, cracked, or broken
- Teeth with extensive cavities
- Discoloured teeth
- They can boost the aesthetic appeal of your smile
- Provide added strength to a tooth weakened from a root canal treatment
Inlays and Onlays
- Inlays and onlays are two types of restorations that your dentist can suggest if you have a cavity in your tooth that needs to be filled. These are made outside the mouth by a dental laboratory. An inlay is a small filling that fits into the biting surface of a tooth while an onlay covers a larger area of the tooth and is better suited to bigger cavities that also extend over the surface of the tooth.
- For many years, gold has been used to make inlays and onlays because it is a hard material and lasts for a long time. Nowadays, tooth-coloured porcelain is also used and gives the restored tooth a more natural look, which many patients prefer.
- Inlays and onlays are usually made in a dental laboratory by a technician, with the help of impressions or a digital scan taken of your teeth. While these are being made, you will have a temporary filling. When your inlay or onlay is ready your dentist will bond or cement it into place using a special adhesive, after removing the temporary filling.
- Benefits of inlays and onlays – they are strong and generally last longer than fillings. They are most suitable for moderately damaged or decayed teeth at the back of the mouth to provide strength and stability for normal chewing.
